    Preventative measures

A good dirt barrier system is absolutely critical for maintaining the appearance and preserving the investment of interior floor finishes, by reducing soil transfer from outside sources. Walk-off mats should be placed at all entrances and, wherever possible, be at least 3 metres long. They should be regularly inspected and cleaned.

Consideration should be given to the colour selection of the main product, as it goes without saying that darker/duller colours with contrasting highlight flecks will hide soil more readily than light, bright, plain colours. This should be taken into account in association with the product’s intended use.

    On-going maintenance

Heavy traffic areas must be intensively vacuumed daily to keep soiling to a minimum. Upright vacuum cleaners with a brushing action are recommended in preference to tub-vacs that rely on suction alone. For lighter traffic areas adjust frequency to suit installation and adopt a daily light vacuuming process.

As part of the maintenance programme, immediate daily spot cleaning should be carried out. Special attention should be paid to vending points, photocopier stations, restrooms, and entrances and doorways.

    Periodic Cleaning

The dry extraction method of carpet cleaning, such as the Host system or similar, is recommended.

Vacuum the entire area with an upright vacuum with a brushing action. Remove spots and stains with a spot removal preparation. Spray only the worst areas lightly with a heavy soil pre-spray agent, to loosen the dirt. Evenly sprinkle the dry powder compound onto the carpet tiles following the manufacturer’s instructions, and brush it into and through the pile with a cylindrical brushing machine. The powder should be left to dry completely (at least ½ an hour) before thorough removal with an upright vacuum.

The application should be repeated if necessary for heavily soiled areas.

The Host method of dry cleaning is usually carried out by contract cleaning specialists.
